Equestrian Perspective

May 20, 2021

In this episode, Elsa Sinclair shares her journey to explore the following question that a student asked her many years ago: What if horses were given a choice? Would they let us ride them? Without force or tools to control, and without bribes to lure them?

 Together we dive into:

  • Her upbringing with horses and the important lessons she learnt in her childhood
  • Her career as a horse trainer and how one question caused her to explore a new way of training
  • How she documented her journey with a wild mustang to see if horses really had a choice would they let us ride them?
  • What that journey looked like and how it led her to create her Freedom Based Training approach that she teaches today
  • Her second documentary outlining her journey with a previously abused horse that was deemed unrideable to spending 2 weeks with him travelling across Costa Rica and what they were able to achieve together
  • How her third documentary is coming along as she aims to use the same approach but with 2 stallions, one that has been abused in the past and the other that hasn't had any interaction with humans
  • Her thoughts on positive reinforcement and negative reinforcement and how she views her reinforcers like salad, they can really take it or leave it

and so much more!

It was such a pleasure to talk to Elsa and I think anyone that listens to this episode will feel so inspired and in complete awe of what we are able to do with these incredible animals.
